There’s nothing quite like the buzz of a local sports club being brought back to life, and that’s exactly what’s happening at the Aupōuri Rugby Football & Sports Club (ARFSC), a Rugby For Life supported club since 2023.
If you’ve followed their journey online via this Facebook post, you’ll already have a sense of the impact this project is making. But for those unfamiliar with The Club, here’s the story behind the upgrade, what it means for the community, and what’s next.
The Club is more than just a facility. For over 40 years, it has been a cornerstone of the Te Kao community, providing sports opportunities for whānau across the Aupōuri Peninsula. Whether it’s rugby, netball, league, or touch, people from Ngātaki, Pukenui, Te Hāpua, and Waiharara come together here.
With increasing participation and a growing base of tamariki and rangatahi, there was no question that the time for an upgrade had come. The goal was simple yet vital — to restore a space where the community can stay active, connected, and proud.
This project is a powerful example of what can be achieved when community drive is backed by strong partnerships and support. Spearheaded by Club President Rosie Conrad and the committed club team, including RFL Club Coordinator Bryar Crewther-Abraham, the revitalisation came to life thanks to the combined efforts of hardworking volunteers and generous contributions from key funders.
Support from Foundation North, Lottery Community Funding, and the Milford Foundation Cyclone Gabrielle Fund, alongside guidance from RFL, played a crucial role in making the upgrades possible. The club also worked steadily over the past couple of years to fund remaining costs, showing real heart and dedication to seeing the project through.
Planning is already underway for the next stage, with a new funding application in the works. The goal is clear — complete all remaining upgrades in time for the 2026 season and continue creating a space the club and wider community can be proud of.
This project is about inclusion, safety, and preparing for the future. The new facility helps ensure the club continues to thrive and serve as a fun and supportive space for all generations.
The upgrades include:
The newly completed changing rooms were put to immediate use when the club hosted the Te Taitokerau Rugby League Women's Grand Final — a proud and powerful moment for the community.
While sport is the vehicle, community is the heartbeat of this club. The Club continues to deliver much more than weekend matches, including:
With the upgraded facilities, everyone — from kaumātua to pēpi — can take part in community events with better comfort, accessibility, and pride.
The work isn’t finished yet. Planning is under way for the next round of funding, with sights firmly set on completing the dream in time for the 2026 season.
