At Rugby for Life, we believe in the power of rugby to connect, uplift and strengthen our communities. That belief is now in action through our Employment, Training and Education programme, which is using our trusted club network to help people across Te Tai Tokerau find meaningful employment.
This is not just about jobs. It is about standing alongside whānau, removing roadblocks and helping them build the confidence to succeed.
Our rugby clubs have always been more than just fields and clubrooms. They are spaces where communities come together, where people support one another and where real relationships grow. That is exactly why they are central to this kaupapa.
Through our connections with local clubs, we are identifying people who are motivated to work and ready for change but may not have access to the right support. Once we make the connection, our team gets to work. We help them take that first step and guide them through what can often be a complex journey.
We assist with the basics that can become big challenges. Things like getting a driver licence, preparing for their first job interview or simply having someone believe they are capable. From the first kōrero to starting the job, Rugby for Life walks with them.
When we looked for an employer who shared our values and truly understood the power of second chances, Northland Waste stood out straight away.
They were on board from day one. More than that, they were willing to actively support the journey, not just offer a job. Everyone got behind it, from the HR team to the site crews.
Together, we built a pathway focused on care, connection and long-term success. Monthly check-ins, ongoing mentoring and clear expectations are all part of the approach. It is about creating the right environment for growth.
Since launching this initiative in May:
Participants range in age from 17 to their early 50s. Many had limited work experience, and most identify as Māori. What they shared was a strong drive to make a change.
Some outcomes we have already seen include:
These are not just job placements. These are life-changing shifts, powered by community.
What makes this work is simple. We put people first. We do not walk away once the contract is signed. We work alongside participants as they build new routines and settle into their roles, and we support them through the tough spots too.
Our clubs, our coaches, our volunteers and our community all have a role to play. When everyone backs the kaupapa, the outcomes speak for themselves.
More clubs are joining us. More employers are saying yes. And more whānau are being supported into futures they never thought possible.
We aim to support another 30 people into employment by June 2026, and we welcome anyone who wants to be part of the journey.
If you are part of a club and know someone ready for a fresh start, or if you are an employer prepared to support someone into work, we want to hear from you.
This is what Rugby for Life is all about. On the field, off the field, for life.
